Steven J. Jackson

Steven J. Jackson is a professor in the Department of Information Science and the Department of Science and Technology Studies at Cornell University, and has served as Vice Provost for Academic Innovation since July 2023. His research focuses on the intersection of ethics of technology, infrastructure and repair, sustainability, and technology inequality and global development, with particular attention to technological practices in the Global South. Professor Jackson is one of the pioneers of the "repair studies" field, using methods such as ethnography to explore how breakdown, maintenance, and repair in technological systems become sites of innovation, power, and ethics. He leads the "Earth Computing Lab," which rethinks the material and planetary foundations of computing, and his work has had a profound impact on fields like Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI).
