Motahhare Eslami

Motahhare Eslami is an Assistant Professor at the Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) and the Software and Societal Systems Department within the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. Her research focuses on human-computer interaction, social computing, and data mining, with a primary emphasis on understanding user behavior in socio-technical systems, algorithm transparency, and mitigating the negative impacts of algorithmic opacity on user behavior through increased transparency. She is dedicated to addressing accountability challenges in algorithmic systems, particularly empowering marginalized community users to make transparent, fair, and informed decisions. She has received the Google PhD Fellowship and multiple Best Paper Awards, Honorable Mentions, and Diversity and Inclusion Contribution Awards at top ACM conferences. Her research is supported by NSF, Amazon, Google, Meta, Cisco, among others, and has been widely covered by media outlets such as Time, The Washington Post, and BBC.
