Shivani Kapania

Shivani Kapania is a PhD candidate in the Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science. Her research focuses on creating mechanisms to enable user accountability and enhance user agency within machine learning systems. She has worked as a researcher with the AI team at Google Research, the FATE team at Microsoft Research, and the Weizenbaum Institute, where she conducted mixed-method research on dataset production practices. Shivani has published numerous high-impact papers in the fields of human-computer interaction, machine learning, and responsible AI, earning best paper awards and nominations at multiple international conferences. She is passionate about education and has served as a mentor in several teaching programs.
