Mark S Ackerman

Mark S. Ackerman is George Herbert Mead Professor Emeritus of Information in the University of Michigan School of Information and Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the College of Engineering. His primary research areas are Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), with related work in social computing, collaborative information access, pervasive environments, organizational memory, privacy, and sociotechnical systems. His research addresses collaborative information access in online knowledge communities and medical settings, expertise sharing, and health information. Ackerman is an ACM Fellow and a member of the CHI Academy (HCI Fellow); in 2017 he received the European Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (ECSCW) Lifetime Achievement Award.

He previously taught at the University of California, Irvine, and was a research scientist at MIT’s Laboratory for Computer Science before joining the University of Michigan in 2001. Earlier in his career, he led development of a home banking system and worked on the first user-interface widget set for the X Window System.
