Shwetak N Patel

Shwetak N. Patel is the Washington Research Foundation Entrepreneurship Endowed Professor in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering and the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Washington. He is also the Allen School’s Associate Director for Development & Entrepreneurship and directs the Ubicomp Lab. His research focuses on human-computer interaction, ubiquitous computing, and sensor-enabled embedded systems, particularly the application of computing to health, sustainability, and novel interaction. Concurrently, he is a Distinguished Scientist and head of Health Technologies at Google.

Patel received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2008 and his B.S. in Computer Science in 2003. He co-founded Zensi, a residential energy-monitoring company acquired by Belkin in 2010; SNUPI Technologies and its WallyHome product, acquired by Sears in 2015; and Senosis Health, a mobile-health company acquired by Google in 2017. His honors include the 2011 MacArthur Fellowship, the 2016 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), and the 2018 ACM Prize in Computing. He is an ACM Fellow.
