Madeline Balaam

Madeline Balaam is a Professor in Media Technology & Interaction Design at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Her research concerns interaction design for health and wellbeing, using participatory and user-centred design methods to explore digital women's health and intimate technologies. Her research direction includes menstrual technologies such as Menarche Bits, the Pelvic Chair for interaction with the intimate body, and digital experiences of the menopause transition. This work uses soma design to engage with sensory, emotional and full-bodied experience.

She helped design FeedFinder, an app for finding, reviewing and sharing public breastfeeding locations, and co-developed Labella with Teresa Almeida to explore women's knowledge of intimate anatomy. KTH's profile states that the Labella work received a CHI 2016 Best Paper award. Before joining KTH, she was a research fellow in the Interact Lab at the University of Sussex.
