W5.05.4Minimap dependence and spatial memorydesign

Overreliance on minimaps weakens memory for space in the main view

Aliases: spatial memory · wayfinding · minimap dependence · cognitive map

What it is

Minimap dependence and spatial memory describes players persistently attending to a corner map and route arrow, completing immediate navigation while encoding fewer landmarks, turns, and layout relations in the main view. It does not mean minimaps should disappear; it identifies how external navigation aid can substitute for, rather than support, an environmental model.

Why it happens

Spatial memory integrates movement, visual landmarks, and direction change into a reusable cognitive map. A minimap directly provides location and next step, reducing the need for active observation and route recall; short-term navigation efficiency rises while independent wayfinding can weaken. Repeated gaze shifts also reduce contact with world detail, so routes are remembered as following an arrow rather than as specific spatial relations.

Where it stops holding

Map aid is valuable for accessibility, vast worlds, limited time, and cooperative rendezvous, and reliance should not be moralized. Some players value route efficiency rather than spatial memory. The issue arises when exploration, world understanding, or unaided return are game goals but only a tracking line is offered, without graduated alternatives for learning the environment.

Applying it

  • Make active navigation, directional cues, landmark hints, and minimap removal adjustable layers; where suitable, use environmental landmarks, path review, and optional weak hints to support learning.
  • Do not force map removal. Offer temporary expansion, exploration modes, or guidance that fades after completion so players choose external aid level.
  • Verification: after removing or changing a target, ask players to return to visited locations. Compare landmark recall, independent route success, and frustration across assistance strengths.
