Orientation alignment changes spatial-transformation burden

Aliases: north-up · heading-up · map orientation · spatial transformation

What it is

Map orientation alignment chooses between north-up or fixed-world orientation and heading-up maps that rotate with the player. The first remains consistent with a global map and external marks; the second keeps map-forward aligned with screen-forward. The choice determines whether players mentally rotate the map, their view, or maintain world direction on a continuously rotating display.

Why it happens

Fixed orientation stabilizes relations among landmarks for long-range planning but requires conversion from facing direction into map coordinates. Heading-up reduces conversion for immediate left/right/forward action but changes relative symbol position after every turn, destabilizing remembered world direction. Burden follows task: pursuit and immediate turning favour action congruence, while exploration, communication, and global routes favour stable reference.

Where it stops holding

No orientation is universally better. Experience, real-map habits, 3D viewpoint, vehicle speed, and cooperative language all matter. Automatic switching can destroy reference; if used, it needs clear indication at a stable boundary. Players with colour or reading difficulties may need stronger direction arrows and text labels too.

Applying it

  • Offer north-up, heading-up, or switchable presets from core task, with player arrow, compass, and directional labels making the current reference clear.
  • In team play, maintain a communicable world reference or express both relative and absolute direction in pings and text.
  • Verification: compare turning time, route memory, verbal-reference success, and rotation errors across orientations; do not select a default from stated preference alone.
