Minimap scale must trade detail against coverage
Aliases: minimap scale · zoom level · spatial overview · navigation
What it is
The minimap scale trade-off decides whether a limited screen region shows local paths, obstacles, and enemies in detail or a larger relation among objectives, teammates, and routes. Zooming in improves local discrimination; zooming out expands spatial preview. No one scale is optimal for rapid turns, long-range planning, and close avoidance at once.
Why it happens
A map is a reduced spatial model. At large scale, players know what is near their feet but cannot see upcoming routes or teammates; at small scale, symbols crowd and local corners and risks become unclear. Tasks invoke different scales: immediate movement needs local geometry, while route choice needs global relation. Scale changes the range of spatial decision that information can support, not merely graphical size.
Where it stops holding
Automatic zoom can shift scale during stress and disrupt distance sense and learned positions; fixed scale may suit a single-size competitive map. A minimap cannot always carry detail: complex interiors, verticality, changing terrain, and occlusion need other views or world cues. Players need to know current scale, predict changes, and control it when necessary.
Applying it
- Define scale needs for combat, navigation, and exploration, offering a visible scale cue, smooth zoom, manual magnification, and stable contextual presets.
- When automatic zoom is unavoidable, preserve centre, orientation, and important-mark continuity; do not change scale and heading simultaneously.
- Verification: test nearby avoidance, teammate rendezvous, and cross-area navigation at different scales, comparing route errors, repeated zooming, and estimates of objective distance.
