Haiyi Zhu

Haiyi Zhu is the Daniel P. Siewiorek Associate Professor of Human-Computer Interaction at Carnegie Mellon University and the Director of the HCI undergraduate program. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Tsinghua University and her Master’s and PhD degrees in Human-Computer Interaction from Carnegie Mellon University. Her research integrates social science theories, quantitative methods, and computational techniques (e.g., machine learning and statistics) to study and design large-scale online social systems. These include peer production communities like Wikipedia, social networks such as Facebook, massive open online courses (e.g., Coursera), and sharing economy platforms like Uber and Airbnb. Professor Zhu has received several NSF grants, the Allen Newell Award for Research Excellence, and multiple best paper awards (e.g., CHI, CSCW). She is highly influential in the fields of fairness in algorithm design and social computing.
