Arbitration of human–machine intent conflict needs timely feedback

Aliases: arbitration feedback · control conflict · override feedback

What it is

Shared-control conflict feedback promptly reveals that human and machine inputs disagree, which part was accepted or constrained, and what motion is executing. It lets the operator revise intent or accept a safety constraint rather than infer authority from delayed path error.

Why it happens

Without feedback, rejected input resembles failure or insufficient command, prompting stronger input while automation counters it. Immediate feedback closes the higher-level loop so the person changes goal, position, or conflict. “Assistance on” does not reveal the current override.

Studying it

Goal, path, and speed conflicts can compare no feedback, post-hoc notice, continuous haptic, and visual feedback on repeated input, conflict duration, path, recovery, and agency. Delay and erroneous arbitration matter, including human detection and veto.

Where it stops holding

Alerting every micro-correction overloads; continuous resistance or direction can aggregate. Safety constraints may be non-overridable but still expose object and release condition. Feedback does not prove correct arbitration, so stop and audit remain.

Applying it

  • Distinguish soft suggestion, clipping, and hard safety constraint through feedback strength and persistence.
  • During conflict show human intent, machine judgement, and executed direction, marking restoration afterward.
  • Test sustained opposition and wrong machine judgement for conflict time, command escalation, correct veto, and recovery.
