Katharina Reinecke

Katharina Reinecke is a Professor and Associate Director for Research and Communication in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington, where she directs the Wildlab and the Center for Globally Beneficial AI. She is also affiliated with Human-Centered Design & Engineering and the DUB group. Her research focuses on human-computer and human-AI interaction, especially how differences in culture, language, age, education, and ability shape the usability, understandability, trustworthiness, and fairness of digital technology. Her team uses LabintheWild for large-scale, cross-cultural studies and develops tools that help designers and researchers identify and mitigate bias.

She is a co-founder of Augury Design Inc. and served as paper co-chair for UIST 2019 and CSCW 2022. Her work has been funded by the NSF, Microsoft, Google, Adobe, and Meta, and has received an NSF CAREER award, the Swiss Computer Science Challenge Award, the 2023 ACL Outstanding Paper Award, the 2023 W4A Best Paper Award, Best Paper and Honorable Mention awards at CHI and other venues, the Mercator Prize, and the Madrona Prize. She is also the author of Digital Culture Shock, which her homepage lists as a 2026 Nautilus Book Award recipient.
