James A. Landay

James Landay is a professor of Computer Science at Stanford University and holds the Anand Rajaraman and Venky Harinarayan Professorship within Stanford Engineering. He is the co-founder and co-director of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (Stanford HAI). Professor Landay’s research areas include Human-Computer Interaction, Ubiquitous Computing, User Interface Design Tools, Behavior Change Technologies, and Cross-Cultural Interface Design. He was the first to introduce the concept of sketching in user interface design tools and has excelled in both academia and industry, including as director of Intel Labs Seattle and co-founder and Chief Scientist of NetRaker. An ACM SIGCHI Academy Member and ACM Fellow, he has received the ACM SIGCHI Lifetime Research Award and served six years on the NSF CISE Advisory Committee. His current research focuses on leveraging technology to foster health and sustainability while advancing human-centered AI.
