W5.03.3Resource visual hierarchydesign

Multiple resources need visual hierarchy by priority

Aliases: visual hierarchy · resource priority · information hierarchy · HUD resources

What it is

Resource visual hierarchy communicates which resources deserve attention now when health, shield, ammunition, energy, currency, materials, cooldowns, and quest items are visible together. Position, size, contrast, grouping, and state change can express this. Hierarchy is not a permanent ranking; it helps players first read the item that changes action in the current task.

Why it happens

Equal-looking simultaneous elements force players to scan item by item and calculate priority themselves, which risks omission under time pressure. Hierarchy externalizes action logic: critical survival, current-weapon, and immediate-objective resources are closer to the next decision than inventory materials. Stable grouping reduces search, while dynamic emphasis lets priority follow risk.

Where it stops holding

Hierarchy does not mean keeping only one resource. Complex strategy, cooperation, and accessibility can require several values side by side; aggressive reordering also destroys learned location. Colour cannot be the only channel. The goal is legible relation and predictable change, not hiding lower-priority information completely.

Applying it

  • Group resources by immediate survival, current action, short-term plan, and long-term management, combining location, size, shape, text, and contrast for hierarchy.
  • Emphasize the relevant group when risk changes without arbitrarily moving base locations; allow pinning, expansion, and rearrangement.
  • Verification: present resource-conflict scenarios and record what players inspect first, whether they can explain priority, and whether they miss critical resources. Compare scan time for uniform versus layered presentation.
