W5.03.2Decision-matched numerical precisiondesign

Resource precision should match the granularity of actual decisions

Aliases: numerical precision · resource display · rounding · decision granularity

What it is

Decision-matched numerical precision presents health, ammunition, currency, probability, and cooldown at enough detail to support real choices, rather than blindly exposing more decimals or oversimplifying. The standard is not internal calculation precision but the difference a player must distinguish at thresholds, comparisons, and plans.

Why it happens

Overly fine values invite optimization of differences with no behavioural consequence, adding reading cost and false certainty. Overly coarse values hide thresholds for payment, survivable damage, or skill activation. Display granularity should match action granularity: if a purchase, attack, or consumption occurs in whole units, decimals rarely help; if a narrow threshold determines success, hiding precision blocks sound decisions.

Where it stops holding

The same resource can need different precision by context. Combat HUD may use ranges or bars while build and trading screens require detail, and expert players may want deeper data. Simplification cannot conceal uncertainty in random, variable, or paid probability; a vague range must not make outcomes appear stable.

Applying it

  • Identify actual decision thresholds and smallest executable units. Show range, trend, or key threshold in fast layers and exact explanation in planning layers.
  • Mark estimates, randomness, and dynamic change with ranges and update times; offer advanced information modes without forcing detail on everyone.
  • Verification: have players make purchase, healing, ability, and risk choices from displayed values, testing feasibility prediction. Adjust when decimals never alter choice or coarse values cause errors.
