What it is
Outcome-based visibility makes reviewable deliverables, interim progress, blockers, and next commitments visible so collaborators can understand work state without inferring it from online time or input frequency. It supplies coordination visibility without making every minute an evaluable object.
Why it happens
Collaboration usually needs to know whether a result is dependable, when it will arrive, and where help is needed. Activity duration answers these questions only weakly and penalises different rhythms and care responsibilities. Binding status to an object and commitment shifts attention from screen posture to downstream effect; stale status is also inspectable because it blocks dependents directly.
Studying it
- Paradigms: compare activity dashboards and work-object status boards on coordination tasks; interview how roles use status.
- Variables: status freshness, commitment reliability, blocker exposure, repeated inquiries, and cross-role agreement.
- Methodological caution: delivery counts incentivise fragmentation; include quality, dependencies, and invisible maintenance work.
Where it stops holding
Exploration, care, support, and infrastructure maintenance may resist short-cycle output. Visible output must not become a new continuous ranking; its audience, purpose, and granularity remain bounded.
Applying it
- Show an owner, next verifiable milestone, risk, and requested help for each work item—not an online timer.
- Embed updates in the existing delivery flow rather than creating a second reporting task.
- Review results, quality, and blockers; do not treat delayed reply as absence.
- Verification: measure whether dependents ask fewer status questions and audit whether invisible work across roles remains recognised.
