A generic reason is no reason

Aliases: empty why · picked for you · generic justification

What it is

“Picked for you,” “you might like this,” “based on your taste” can sit under any row in the catalogue. They contribute nothing to “why this row rather than the one beside it.” A vacuous recommendation reason is a sentence compatible with every item: it occupies the reason slot and supplies no discriminating information.

Vacuous is not short. Vacuous is a likelihood ratio of one. Synonyms — “fits your interests” versus “matches your preferences” — stay vacuous.

Why it happens

A reason informs by what it rules out. “Hard bop” rules out a pop hit. “For you” rules out nothing. The user cannot update a model of the system, so predictability does not rise. If acceptance rises, it is courtesy, not trust in a rule.

Vacuous copy also occupies the slot. People see words under “why” and treat the explanation as given, then stop looking for a real basis. Once the seat is taken, a faithful specific sentence has nowhere to sit. Vacuity is not merely useless; it replaces the useful.

Studying it

Give the same list three captions: no reason, a vacuous reason (“picked for you”), a specific reason (a recognisable feature). Measure whether people can name how this row differs from its neighbour, forecast the type of the next item, and still open a “why” control. Independent variables: discriminability of the copy (share of items the sentence could apply to), length matched so “short” is not confounded with “empty.” Dependent variables: recognition of between-item difference, forecast hits, second-look explanation requests.

If vacuous and specific reasons tie on clicks, that only says clicks do not eat reasons. It does not say vacuous “works.” Between-item recognition is the test. Whether the same sentence is pasted on every row is a separate factor; do not fold it into semantic vacuity.

Where it stops holding

Brand voice may need a section label (“Today’s picks”). That is a heading, not an item reason; it can live on the rail, not under every row. After the user has already filtered the set to a handful, there is little left to discriminate — then the filter itself is the reason. This entry is about semantic vacuum, not post-hoc generation, and not identical sentence templates.

Applying it

  • After writing a reason, paste it onto the neighbouring item. If it still reads fine, delete and rewrite. Fine means vacuum.
  • The rail may say “for you.” The row must land on a recognisable difference: genre, author, the title last completed — not a taste hypernym.
  • Check: take ten items, hide titles, keep reasons, ask people to pair which reasons could swap. Swap rate near chance means the reasons discriminate. If most can swap, the whole rail is empty.
