Cancelled subscriptions keep remaining period benefits

What it is

Cancel stops the next capture, not the service already paid for. For remaining days in the period, features, quotas, and download rights stay on, then shut at period end. Immediate shutoff treats prepaid time as unused. It is not whether cancel is findable or whether retention blocks—those are the door and the gate. This is how benefits wind down after cancel completes.

Why it happens

A subscription is mentally “use-rights for this stretch.” Money already covers through period end; immediate shutoff creates paid-but-unused, so people demand a daily refund or chargeback. If cancel is engineered as “void the contract now,” dropping entitlements is simple and turns prepaid into punishment. The UI must state two dates: when renewals stop, and until when service runs. They should match. After cancel, the product remains enterable, with a pinned “cancelled · available until,” or people think cancel failed and start a second sub.

Studying it

Cancel mid-period. Compare immediate shutoff, access until period end, immediate shutoff with daily refund. Watch complaint types and whether a second sub is opened.

Independent variables: when access drops, whether “available until” is shown, daily refund offered. Dependent variables: completing a core paid task after cancel, tickets for “money gone, features gone,” accidental second subscribe.

Labs that cancel on the period’s last day will not show remaining benefits. Use a period with days left.

Where it stops holding

Metered or one-shot credits are not a subscription period; cancel may have no “current term.” Compliance that requires immediate stop (gambling, adult content opened by a minor) may shut off, but money must be handled separately. Trial cancel usually has no paid current term. A seat removed by a company admin is permission, not consumer cancel.

Applying it

• Completed cancel states “no further capture / service until YYYY-MM-DD”; entitlements hold until that date.
• Pin that state in-product so it is not read as failed cancel.
• If the business must shut immediately, pair it with unused-days refund or store credit; do not only cut access.
• Verify by cancelling mid-period and using a paid feature the same day: it works, and the page names “available until.” Unusable the same day with no refund fails the wind-down.
