Warn before trial converts to paid

Aliases: trial conversion · free trial reminder · trial charge

What it is

A trial prices the period at zero or a token amount, then captures at list when it ends. Remind before conversion means, before that first real capture, delivering date, amount due, and a cancel path into a window where exit is still possible. It is not every later renewal notice—those assume price unchanged. It is not a price increase. What changes here is free/trial becoming “now you pay.”

Why it happens

Trial binds the decision to “try first”; loss stays encoded as zero. Memory will not treat a capture weeks later as a deal already made. With no conversion reminder, the first real statement feels like a stealth charge; cancel and chargeback happen in anger. A signup check on “auto-renew at end” is not enough: that check sat at the excitement of starting, and decays. The reminder must state list price, not trial price, and “trial ends X, then Y per period.” The path must cancel before capture, or the reminder only announces a fait accompli.

Studying it

Compare no reminder after signup, reminder on due day, reminder days before with amount and cancel link. Watch cancel after first real capture, chargeback, support “I didn’t know it cost money.”

Independent variables: lead time, list price written, cancel completable from the reminder. Dependent variables: cancel before conversion, dispute after, restating the amount before capture.

Labs can use calendar scenarios instead of real trial weeks. Do not invent what percent of people forget trials; measure whether the reminder exists and which fields it carries, not a growth-team figure.

Where it stops holding

Statutory lead (e.g. notice 24 hours before) is a floor; the amount still has to be stated. If no payment method is bound when the trial ends, conversion should fail and notify, not quietly attach a new card. A one-day trial has almost no window; an unskippable sentence at signup must name end moment and amount. Store-billed trials still need an in-app reminder, not only store mail.

Applying it

  • Inside the cancellable window, send conversion reminder: end date, first list amount, period, cancel link.
  • In-product trial badge: “n days left · then ¥Y / period.”
  • Cancel before capture uses the same completed state as ordinary subscribe; do not hide a special trial-cancel.
  • Verify with a test trial: from the reminder alone, people state how much will capture and how to cancel. Trial price on the reminder, or no cancel link, fails conversion notice.
