Situation awareness covers current state, change trends, and future projection
Aliases: situation awareness · perception comprehension projection · freeze probe
What it is
Three-level situation awareness spans perceiving current robot/environment elements, comprehending their task meaning, and projecting near-future development. Position and battery are only current state; understanding drift and predicting entry into a blind region support proactive control.
Why it happens
Data acquires meaning through goals, constraints, and history, then a mental model projects trends. Snapshot-only displays force memory; alarm-only displays hide development. Causal links among state, trend, and projection reduce reconstruction.
Studying it
Freeze probes can ask what, why, and next, alongside prediction, intervention, and performance. One score hides correct perception with wrong comprehension. Probes interrupt work and need behavioural triangulation.
Where it stops holding
Experts may recognise patterns without a strict sequence, and open environments limit prediction. Forecasts need horizon and uncertainty. Situation awareness does not replace automatic protection.
Applying it
- Place key state beside goal and constraint, showing direction, rate, and short-term consequence.
- Mark forecast horizon, basis, and uncertainty, retaining revisions.
- Combine level-specific probes with real intervention to locate the broken layer.
