Overly technical explanations are equivalent to no explanation for field personnel

What it is

An audience-calibrated explanation uses the recipient's task, vocabulary, and authority. Layer names, coordinate matrices, or confidence vectors may aid developers but do not tell a nurse, warehouse worker, or passer-by whether conditions are safe and what to do.

Why it happens

Explanation has value only when mapped to action. Technical detail consumes working memory and requires unavailable background models, so field staff ignore it or rely on colour. Compressing cause into object, environment, risk, and next action preserves decision-relevant causality while retaining deeper evidence for investigators.

Studying it

Raw technical, plain causal, action-oriented, and layered explanations can be compared by role on diagnosis, action, search time, over-reliance, and escalation. Readability alone is insufficient. Simplification must be checked for omitted choice-changing conditions.

Where it stops holding

Maintainers and certifiers need technical evidence; calibration is not permanent concealment. Oversimplification can imply a unique cause before diagnosis is settled. Layers should follow work practice rather than stereotypes about education.

Applying it

• Define questions for bystander, operator, maintainer, and investigator instead of shortening one technical paragraph.
• Lead with cause class, affected object, risk, and action, then permit evidence drill-down.
• Test correct action and escalation in role-realistic tasks, asking participants to restate limits and uncertainty.
