Sensor fusion can mask component failure without eliminating system blind spots

What it is
Residual blind spots after sensor fusion are conditions that remain unreliable despite combined sensors. Fusion can compensate for noise or brief dropout, but shared occlusion, delay, calibration error, and algorithmic assumptions can produce confidently wrong system output.
Why it happens
Fusion weights observations through spatial, temporal, and error models. Other channels can preserve smooth output after one fails, hiding lost redundancy. Fog, reflection, self-occlusion, or clock drift can damage several sources together. Treating correlated errors as independent inflates confidence.
Studying it
Single, combined, and common-cause faults should measure detection, calibration, failure-discovery time, and degraded behaviour. One covered camera is inadequate. Calibration shifts, desynchronisation, and frozen streams should test whether interfaces distinguish full fusion from single-channel continuation.
Where it stops holding
Redundancy genuinely improves availability when failures are independent and coverage complementary. Raw feeds can overwhelm operators; health and effective coverage are more useful. Safety integrity still requires dedicated engineering evidence.
Applying it
- Build a sensor–failure matrix covering shared occlusion, calibration, power, network, and algorithm dependencies.
- Expose active channels and capability degradation, reducing speed and operating domain as redundancy falls.
- Inject freeze, drift, occlusion, and timing error; compare confidence with outcome and verify safe response to common-cause failure.
