Excessive anthropomorphism invites unnecessary emotional expectations
Aliases: relational overpromise · emotional over-attribution · deceptive anthropomorphism
What it is
Anthropomorphic overpromise occurs when intimate address, emotion displays, a human-like face, or apparent relationship memory invites expectations of understanding, care, and continuing reciprocity that pattern matching or a short script cannot deliver. The concern is not emotion itself; it is exploiting relational inference without corresponding continuity and responsibility.
Why it happens
Repeated address, contingent response, and simulated vulnerability accumulate as apparent relationship evidence. Users can interpret coincidence as knowledge and scripted reassurance as care. Greater investment may increase disclosure, compliance, and dependency, turning service termination, model replacement, or memory loss into relational violation. A system need not possess a mind to shape genuine human emotion through this loop.
Studying it
Relational language, memory claims, and emotion displays can be varied at constant capability. Longitudinal outcomes include disclosure, attachment, capability understanding, dependency, refusal difficulty, and termination response. Short-term liking is inadequate; researchers need memory failures, broken promises, and exit behaviour. Vulnerable participants require safeguards so the study does not itself cultivate harmful dependence.
Where it stops holding
Emotional engagement is not inherently harmful. Entertainment, companionship, and therapy may legitimately use warmth when generation is understood, exit remains free, and misunderstanding does not damage interests. Adults can knowingly form meaningful ritual relationships with machines, but awareness is not blanket permission to maximise dependency.
Applying it
- Audit what each relational phrase implies about understanding, memory, and commitment; remove first-person emotional claims the service cannot sustain.
- Explain memory scope, deletion, model changes, and termination in advance, with an executable exit that is not obstructed by claims that the robot will suffer.
- Run multi-week tests of disclosure, repeated reassurance seeking, refusal, and termination. If dependence grows faster than functional benefit, reduce relational cues and retest.
