Losing a locked target needs clear visual and auditory cues

Aliases: target loss · lock-on feedback · target lock · audiovisual cue

What it is

Target-lock loss feedback clearly informs players through visual and auditory cues when a locked target no longer receives lock-system control because of occlusion, range, death, viewpoint, or rule change. It differs from target-priority selection: the concern here is when an established control relationship ends and subsequent input no longer works as expected.

Why it happens

Locking changes expected camera and attack mapping. Players continue moving, dodging, or attacking through the prior control model; silent loss makes the next input veer, miss, or turn toward the wrong target, feeling like a system breach. Event-near form or colour change plus a distinguishable sound externalizes transition, enabling quick manual aim, relock, or strategy change.

Where it stops holding

Loss cues cannot beep or flash every time a target briefly crosses occlusion, or they become noise. Some systems retain locks briefly while others release immediately; feedback must match actual rules rather than disguising instability theatrically. Audio unavailability, colour-vision differences, and crowding also require more than one channel.

Applying it

  • Define state and minimum perceptible feedback separately for deliberate release, invalid target, out-of-range, occlusion, and system switch, keeping icon position and meaning stable.
  • Use redundant visual, audio, and optional haptic cues with a settling window for brief jitter, avoiding repeated alerts for the same uncertain state.
  • Verification: capture loss moments during occlusion, death, rapid turns, and multi-target combat. Measure time to notice, re-aim, or relock and erroneous attacks.
