W5.01.2Foveal-adjacent survival informationdesign

Core survival information belongs near the centre rather than the edge

Aliases: central HUD · survival information · foveal vision · peripheral awareness

What it is

Foveal-adjacent survival information places health, threat, ammunition, or state that can immediately change a dodge, retreat, heal, or counterattack decision near the player’s main sightline rather than at the screen edge. It need not cover the reticle; the point is to read state determining the next second without a long departure from aiming or scene movement.

Why it happens

Central vision resolves detail fastest, while moving gaze toward an edge temporarily weakens monitoring of targets, enemies, and motion. Under pressure, players cannot spend time reading a corner then return to the scene; a late reading can lose the window for escape or defence. Near-focus placement, or concise changes near the event, shortens the loop between state confirmation and action correction.

Where it stops holding

The centre is also needed for aim, environmental reading, and enemy observation, so too many elements create occlusion and crowding. Viewpoint, pace, and device size change the available “near” area. Edge information may be enough in turn-based, pausable, or low-operation-intensity play; the key is whether risk demands judgment within a short glance.

Applying it

  • Identify state that changes survival decisions within seconds and place it near focus with low occlusion and peripheral detectability; leave other detail at edges or on demand.
  • Combine shape, colour, motion, and audio for critical change instead of relying only on a string of tiny central numbers.
  • Verification: during threat onset, damage, and low-resource states, measure time from noticing status to corrective action and inspect whether the HUD hides targets or attack sources.
