Input forgiveness and aim assist need separate strength options

Aliases: accessibility settings · aim assist · input forgiveness · assist strength

What it is

Granular assistance separates input buffering, timing windows, hold-to-replace-repeated-pressing, aim slowdown, magnetism, and auto-lock into independent strength options. Input forgiveness handles timing and execution error; aim assist handles spatial precision. One generic assist mode cannot let players retain needed challenge while declining unwanted substitution.

Why it happens

Limits, devices, and preferences are multidimensional. One player needs a longer combo window but no reticle magnetism; another can press quickly but cannot make fine stick corrections. Combined settings force overly strong or weak compensation and obscure which help improved access. Independent control better matches support to need while preserving choice over skill space.

Where it stops holding

Too many settings add cognitive burden, so offer sensible defaults, explanation, and presets — but presets cannot replace per-item override. Competitive modes may restrict configurations, but should disclose this rather than binding all assistance into one tier. When help affects several abilities, state its actual mechanism.

Applying it

  • Group settings by timing, spatial precision, repetition, target selection, and information cues; describe effect, scope, and default.
  • Offer recommended profiles plus advanced item-level control, trial, and restore.
  • Verification: have players change one setting while preserving others, confirming the intended barrier changes without surprising unrelated skill changes.
