Excessive assistance disconnects hits from player action

Aliases: aim assist · player agency · skill expression · auto-aim

What it is

When aim assistance crosses actual player direction, selects targets automatically, continuously tracks, or resolves hits after occlusion, it becomes automated targeting rather than error compensation. A hit no longer follows player aim, judgement, and firing, so players cannot tell what they did correctly.

Why it happens

Skill and control need a visible relation between action quality and result. Strong help converts crude or wrongly directed input into success and flattens the difference between precise and rough aim. Players cannot correct through failure or gain stable advantage through better action. Short-term success may rise while learning feedback, competitive credibility, and achievement attribution decline.

Where it stops holding

Auto-lock can be an explicit play mechanic, access alternative, or low-pressure mode when named and scoped. Single-player narrative can tolerate more substitution; competition, valuable challenge, and skill assessment need tighter limits. The issue is not visible assistance, but assistance masquerading as player performance.

Applying it

  • Set maximum angle, distance, visibility, and duration; prohibit through-wall, cross-target, or no-intent activation.
  • Make lock and correction visible in strong modes and separate them from competitive records, rewards, or matching.
  • Verification: compare input path to hit location. Many hits unexplained by input direction mean assistance replaced action.
