Assistance options must be distinct from difficulty options

Aliases: accessibility options · difficulty settings · challenge level · player choice

What it is

Assist settings change how players receive information or execute actions: captions, remapping, visual cues, camera support, or hold-to-replace-repeated-tapping. Difficulty settings change task demand, enemy pressure, resources, or risk. Both can affect completion, but answer different questions: the first enables participation; the second lets players choose challenge. Merging them into an "easy mode" forces players who need assistance to surrender challenge they want to keep and attaches ability judgement to access.

Why it happens

When setting meaning is mixed, players cannot predict what enabling one will change, and may avoid it through shame or fear of missing content. Separation lets a player use an input or sensory alternative at normal or high challenge. It also lets designers distinguish task pressure from inaccessible channels. Completion changes cease to be misread as one measure of "level."

Where it stops holding

Some features affect both effort and challenge, such as aim assist or time dilation. Do not pretend they are purely one category; state their mechanism and allow separate adjustment. Competitive play may group or standardize particular assistance, but must disclose scope. Never shame access settings through achievements, trophies, or copy.

Applying it

  • Organize menus into challenge, control, perception, cognition, and comfort, explaining whether each item affects goal, input, or information.
  • For mixed assistance, specify strength, applicable modes, and competitive rules rather than providing an ambiguous toggle.
  • Persist settings and let them change at any time; do not lock assistance at new-game creation.
  • Verification: ask testers to predict an option's effect without help text. Mistaking assistance for lower difficulty means classification failed.
