Difficulty settings should not exclude players with motor or sensory limitations

What it is
Accessible challenge requires game difficulty to arise from the ability it intends to test, not accidentally from irrelevant barriers such as rapid tapping, precision aim, color recognition, or sound localization. Players with motor or sensory limitations should be able to choose challenge intensity, strategy, and risk, rather than be excluded from an objective because it demands one fixed input or signal.
Why it happens
When a win condition binds several abilities into one inseparable demand, a limit in any one turns challenge into nonparticipation. Separating goal, input speed, information channel, and forgiveness preserves the game problem while permitting different routes to skill expression. Accessibility is not automatic success; it removes task burdens unrelated to the goal so failure can still be attributed to a practiceable, chosen part.
Where it stops holding
Some experiences genuinely center a particular physical skill, but should state that scope and offer spectating, alternate modes, or different goals where possible. Competitive comparison may retain common rules without treating default control as the only fair form; grouping, input choice, or separate assistance strengths can handle differences. General caption, color, and switch-access mechanisms are covered elsewhere; this entry concerns keeping game goals available.
Applying it
- Split each hard point into target ability, input demand, perceptual cue, and time limit; identify what can vary without changing the goal.
- Offer independent remapping, adjustable time, visual audio, aiming, or action alternatives, and keep main content completable in combination.
- Test with players under different constraints: with assistance, does meaningful strategy remain?
- Verification: ask why a player failed. If it was an unavailable unique signal rather than the target ability, difficulty is excluding them.
