Transmission delay makes both speakers start and retreat

What it is

A double start and retreat occurs when delay makes two people read the other’s pause as a yielded turn, both begin, then both politely stop on hearing overlap. It is not poor manners; each endpoint holds a different current state of the conversation.

Why it happens

Each person hears completion late and chooses a locally reasonable entry. Overlap reaches the other end late too, causing simultaneous retreat. Repetition lengthens pauses and produces “you go first,” slowing discussion and rewarding people willing to press on.

Studying it

• Paradigms: vary round-trip delay and jitter while coding double starts, retreat, pauses, and eventual speaker.
• Variables: delay, jitter, group size, overlap duration, retreat, and turn inequality.
• Methodological caution: not all overlap is failure; affiliative overlap in familiar talk can serve another function.

Where it stops holding

Low-latency familiar dyads can adapt through prosody. Strict queues remove double starts but poorly fit rapid interjection and joint thinking.

Applying it

• Signal degraded connection and provide text, hand raise, or named turns.
• Have facilitators designate the next speaker or return to the deferred speaker.
• Do not hide overlap with automatic mute; leave repair cues available.
• Verification: count double starts and retreat by connection quality and test whether weak links complete fewer turns.
