Handoff content should accumulate during work rather than be reconstructed at transfer time

What it is

Progressive handoff capture moves state, decisions, evidence, and open issues into shared records as work occurs rather than reconstructing them from memory when a shift ends or a person leaves. The final handoff becomes selection and confirmation over a maintained work trace.

Why it happens

End-of-period reconstruction is vulnerable to forgetting, outcome bias, and time pressure. In-work capture uses current context and distributes recording into small actions. When documentation is detached from the task, however, continuous capture becomes duplicate labor. Task events should populate state automatically while people add rationale where inference is unsafe.

Studying it

Compare in-work, end-of-shift, and hybrid capture on recall of critical events, record accuracy, maintenance time, recipient errors, and stale information. Sample timestamps against source events rather than treating document length as quality. Continuous capture may itself interrupt work and should be measured accordingly.

Where it stops holding

Exhaustive capture buries important information, exposes sensitive drafts, and can make people work for the record. Early exploration needs private experimentation space. Automation records what occurred but cannot reliably infer why; consequential rationale requires human confirmation.

• Build a timeline from task state, comments, commits, and decisions to reduce duplicate entry.
• Offer lightweight rationale and open-issue fields at consequential changes.
• At transfer, filter current information, mark stale items, and produce a next-action view.
• Compare capture burden with recipient rework and remove high-volume fields without decision value.
