The default ranking after personalization is off is still an editorial choice and must be intelligible

What it is

After “for you” is off, what remains — “latest,” “popular,” “picks” — looks as if no one touched it. Each is a selection: whose clock time cuts on, what window popularity uses, whose list “picks” is. Default ranking as editorial choice means leaving personalization is not a return to a natural order — there is no natural order — but a switch into another arrangement that has to be spoken and checked.

An intelligible off-default, in the previous group, required a rule that can be said in one sentence. The further cut here: that sentence must not pretend to be neutral.

Why it happens

Ranking must take a key. Timestamps depend on time zone and on what “published” means (origin time versus time of arrival on this site); popularity depends on window, deduping, whether ads count; an editorial slate depends on supply and scheduling. If users read the default as “how the world really is,” they will take this key’s bias as the world’s bias. Autonomy from turning personalization off is then only half done: they left “according to me” without being told “according to whom” now.

Admitting editoriality actually raises checkability: you can say “by time of arrival on this site; promotions marked separately.” Pretend neutrality, and any mismatch with expectation is read as the system secretly still ranking “me.” The off state becomes unstable; people flip the switch again to check.

Studying it

After personalization is off, present the same default in two voices: a neutral voice (“by objective popularity”) versus an editorial voice (“by site-wide plays in the last twenty-four hours, promotions excluded”). Measure: whether people can restate the key, whether they can name who this key hurts (new authors, non-English, smaller languages), whether they believe personal estimation has stopped. Independent variables: voice, whether the key’s parameters are visible. Dependent variables: restatement of “ranked by whom now,” rate of judging the default as still personalised.

Do not substitute “satisfaction” for “knowing this is an arrangement.” A satisfying neutral voice may be exactly what hid the editoriality.

Where it stops holding

Some keys are almost forced (time priority at an exchange); editorial room is small, but which clock still has to be named. Live auctions cannot be dressed as chronology; say “by bid.” This entry argues that a default is not neutral and must be explained as an arrangement. It does not restate “the rule must be speakable,” and it does not treat undeclared inference from context after off.

Applying it

• Title the off-state rail with the key, not with “content” or “discover”: “Latest (by time of arrival on this site),” “Twenty-four-hour popular (promotions excluded).”
• Lift promotions and editorial pins out of the default key and mark them. Mixing them into popular without saying so hides editoriality in a neutral voice.
• Check: after off, ask “who ranked this, and whom does it miss.” If the answer is “just the normal order” and no key can be named, editoriality is still hidden. Change the title to a parameterised key and ask again.
