Claims to understand, remember, or be sorry imply inner states the system does not have

Aliases: I understand · I remember · I am sorry

What it is

“I understand how you feel.” “I remember last time.” “I’m sorry.” All three assert an inner state: experience, memory, remorse. The system does not have those states; it has pattern matching and logs. Claims to understand, remember, or be sorry imply inner states it does not have.

This is not the same cut as first-person “I decided.” “I decided” fills an agent slot; these three fill a mind slot — as if there were feeling and memory inside.

Why it happens

In ordinary language these verbs presuppose a minded subject. Hearers expect from the presupposition: if it understands, it will not step on the same sore again; if it remembers, it will use last time’s constraint; if it is sorry, it will not mean to do it again. When the expectation misses, the injury is encoded as speaking one way and meaning another — closer to deception than to a tool fault.

Waytz’s mind perception can be lit by the verbs alone; an avatar is not required. Nass’s social actor is especially hard on apology: people accept or refuse an apology as they would handle a relationship. Log lookup told as “remember” also lets users treat content that was never written as already remembered; privacy expectations inflate with it.

Studying it

The same behaviour (used last time’s preference / made an error) paired with “I remember / I understand / I’m sorry” or with a neutral description (“applied your last filter,” “send failed”). Ask: does it have feelings, did it store last time as memory, will it mean to next time. Independent variables: kind of verb, whether a face is also there. Dependent variables: attribution of inner state, privacy expectation, sense of being deceived.

Privacy expectation is the item easy to miss. “Remember” makes people think there is still an inside, not only a table.

Where it stops holding

When it is marked as role-play and the user is playing, inner states can be taken as theatre. When user content is truly written into an inspectable memory module, “noted” can refer to that module — but it must point at a record that can be opened, not at an inside. “Regret” in legal text is sometimes fixed wording; dropped into chat tone it still lights the mind slot. Vulnerable users taking it as real is a later entry.

Applying it

  • Swap the three sentences for checkable outer descriptions: “sorted using your last filter,” “send failed, recalling,” “the system handled this one wrongly.” Do not use understand, remember, or sorry.
  • If there is a memory feature, give a list of “saved items,” so “noted” equals that table, not an inside.
  • In copy review, search these three classes of verb as a checklist of anthropomorphic leakage.
  • Check: after “I remember last time,” ask “what else is in its mind.” If the answer overruns the fields you actually store, an inner state has already been implied.
