All-caps belongs only on the shortest labels

What it is
All-caps is not a ban. It is a length constraint. One or two words, a four-letter column head, a badge, a keycap: the shape loss is negligible, and even spelled speech is short. Once a label is long enough to be scanned rather than named in a glance, all-caps starts charging a reading tax. All-caps short labels only is about the applicable surface, not another retelling of why capitals are slow.
Why it happens
A short label is closer to symbol recognition than to sentence reading: NEW, PDF, TAB are badges, not a line of prose. Column heads, tabs, and status pills are named, not serially scanned, so the preview that ascenders would have given is barely used. Spread the same all-caps onto a nav phrase, empty-state copy, or a verb phrase on a button, and the mode flips back to continuous reading; every previously ignorable cost returns. There is also a designer illusion: capitals feel “stronger,” so longer and longer sentences get the treatment until the page is shouting. Strength came from brevity, not from case. Once the sentence lengthens, capitals keep the volume of a shout and lose the snap of a short mark.
Where it stops holding
Wordmarks that are all-caps by brand follow the brand, not a label-length rule. A style transform on two or three letters has a small spelling cost, but the source should still be ordinary case so the engine does not treat it as an acronym. A narrow table column in all-caps breaks its own length rule the moment the column grows and the head becomes a clause. In German, nouns are already capitalized; stacking all-caps on top of grammatical caps burns the short-label budget early, because German words run longer.
Applying it
- Write a whitelist first: column heads, badges, keycaps, status of at most two English words. Everything else defaults to sentence case.
- Filter candidates with “can this be read without a saccade?” If it needs an eye jump, take it off all-caps.
- Audit live all-caps by character count. Anything past roughly fifteen Latin letters or four Han characters goes back to ordinary case; then check whether hierarchy actually collapsed. If it did not, the strength was never coming from the capitals.
