All-caps flattens word shape and slows reading

Aliases: word shape · bouma · uppercase reading speed

What it is

Lowercase words have ascenders and descenders, so peripheral vision gets a jagged word shape before the eyes land. Set the same word in capitals and every letter sits between two parallel edges; the silhouette becomes a row of equal-height rectangles. The word is still readable. It is slower: recognition falls back from “naming a shape” to “assembling letters.” Type size and contrast are not the cause. Case itself removed the shape cue the periphery was using.

Why it happens

Reading does not inspect one letter at a time. While a fixation sits mid-word, a few letters on each side are already being sampled in the periphery. Ascenders (b, d, h) and descenders (g, p, y) make neighbouring words’ silhouettes unlike each other, so a familiar word can be named before every letter is resolved. All-caps cancels those extenders, silhouettes converge, preview weakens, and fixations linger or regress. In print-legibility measurement, the same passage set in all-caps loses speed; the loss grows with word length — short function words suffer less, long words suffer more. Even if “whole-word shape” as a sole theory is overplayed, ascenders and descenders as features do not depend on that theory: they are measurable visual variables whose removal slows serial letter recognition.

Studying it

Render one passage in sentence case and in all-caps. Measure oral or silent reading speed, comprehension accuracy, fixation duration, and regressions. Treat word length as a moderator. Hold weight, size, and tracking constant: all-caps looks denser, and people often add tracking without noticing, which swaps the variable from shape to spacing. On screens, also hold anti-aliasing and the size floor, because small all-caps fails as a discriminability problem on top of the shape problem.

Where it stops holding

Known acronyms (NASA, HTML) are already spoken letter-wise; losing word shape is not a new cost. A two- or three-word heading that readers already know may not show a measurable speed drop. Scripts without a case contrast (Han, connected Arabic) sit outside the mechanism — they never had this extender cue. Opening tracking on all-caps recovers some identification; that is spacing compensation, not the silhouette returning.

Applying it

  • Do not default continuous prose, paragraphs, or button labels longer than two or three words to all-caps.
  • Emphasize with weight or colour; leave case for grammar.
  • A paired reading: the same instructional paragraph in all-caps and in sentence case, timed or eye-tracked. If the caps version is clearly slower, the style does not belong on body copy.
