Upol Ehsan

Upol Ehsan is a computer scientist with a dual background in philosophy and engineering. His primary research areas include Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI), and Computational Creativity (CC). He is dedicated to designing human-centered technologies through a sociotechnical and cultural lens to advance the interpretability and ethics of Artificial Intelligence. At Georgia Institute of Technology, he conducted foundational research in collaboration with Professor Mark Riedl, proposing the concept of "Human-Centered Explainable AI" (HCXAI) and publishing several pioneering papers in this domain. His research has significantly influenced the UN's algorithmic compensation policies and the AI Risk Management Framework by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology. In 2024-2025, he will serve as a Fellow at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University, focusing on addressing potential harms of algorithms and their accountability blind spots.
