Benjamin R. Cowan

Dr. Benjamin R. Cowan is a Professor at the School of Information and Communication Studies, University College Dublin. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and Business (2006) and a Ph.D. in Usability Engineering (2011), both from the University of Edinburgh. His research focuses on the intersection of psychology, human-computer interaction, and communication systems, with a particular emphasis on how humans interact with collaborative conversational AI. His work centers on applying theoretical and quantitative methods from psychological science to understand and design collaborative conversational AI experiences. Professor Cowan is the co-founder and co-director of the UCD HCI research group, one of Ireland's largest HCI research teams. He is also a co-founder of the SFI D-REAL Centre for Research Training and a co-principal investigator at the SFI ADAPT Centre. As an ACM Distinguished Speaker, he has given talks globally on conversational AI-related topics and has published more than 70 academic papers.
