Xiangshi Ren

Xiangshi Ren is a professor in the School of Information at Kochi University of Technology and the head of its Center for Human-Engaged Computing (CHEC). His 2024 curriculum vitae lists him as the center's director and professor, and records him as a lifetime tenured professor since 2013. His research focuses on human-computer interaction and user interface design, including human performance modeling, pen-based, multi-touch, eye-based, haptic, and gesture interaction, as well as game interaction, mindfulness interaction, and interfaces for older adults and people with visual impairments. With his colleagues, Professor Ren established the Human-Engaged Computing (HEC) framework for rethinking the relationship between humans and computers through synergized human capacities and technological capabilities.

He is a Fellow of the Information Processing Society of Japan, a member of the Engineering Academy of Japan, a Senior Member of ACM and IEEE, and the founding president and honorary lifetime president of the International Chinese Association of Computer Human Interaction (ICACHI). He was named one of the Asian Human-Computer Interaction Heroes at ACM CHI 2015 and has received honors including the ACM CHI 2017 Best Paper Award, the IEEE SmartComp 2017 Best Community Paper Award, and the CHI 2019 Honorable Mention Award.
