Yoshifumi Kitamura

Yoshifumi Kitamura is a professor at the Research Institute of Electrical Communication, Tohoku University, where he began his tenure in 2010. From 2018 to 2025, he served as the Deputy Director of the institute, and since 2023, he has been the Director of the East Asian Interdisciplinary Research Center for ICT. His research covers areas such as interactive content design, human-computer interaction, 3D user interfaces, telecommunication of non-verbal information, artificial intelligence, image processing, computer vision, and 3D data processing. His research group, composed of colleagues, graduate students, and select talented undergraduate students, strives to maintain a diverse and dynamic research environment. Prof. Kitamura previously held positions as an Associate Professor at Osaka University's Graduate School of Engineering and Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, and as a researcher at ATR Communication Systems Research Laboratories, focusing on advanced user interfaces in virtual environments. He began his career at Canon Inc.'s Information Systems Research Center, specializing in artificial intelligence and related fields. He earned his Bachelor's degree in 1985, Master's degree in 1987, and Doctoral degree in 1996, all from Osaka University.
