Teleport locomotion offers a path for highly sensitive players

What it is
Teleport locomotion (blink movement) replaces continuous movement with "choose a destination → arrive instantly": the player points at a position and the character appears there, with no movement flow in between. It offers the most motion-sensitive players the only viable way into continuous-movement gameplay—any smooth movement (even slowed, even with vignettes) still provokes their symptoms, and teleport removes the movement process itself (no optic flow, no conflict source). Teleport is the strongest tier of the comfort spectrum and, together with smooth-movement tiers, forms the complete locomotion choice set.
Why it happens
Teleport eliminates sickness by eliminating optic flow: the conflict source is visual flow contradicting the vestibular stillness signal, and during a teleport there is no flow (the frame jumps from "here" to "there"), so the conflict never arises—mechanically the only locomotion guaranteed not to induce sickness (every other mitigation only lowers conflict intensity). Teleport's usability design decides its real value: target indication (an arc trajectory preview, a landing reticle) enables precise placement, arrival feedback (a light transition effect, footstep sound) maintains spatial continuity, and landing rules (no teleporting onto unreachable ledges) prevent "teleported and stuck" frustration. Teleport's experiential cost is lost spatial continuity—players have no experience of the space between two points ("how did I get here?" has no answer), so spatial cognition builds more weakly than with smooth movement; this is a genuine trade-off against smooth movement's sickness cost, not one-sided superiority.
Where it stops holding
Teleport's fit depends on genre: exploration- and quest-driven games support it fully (arrival is the point), platformers are removed by it (jumping is the core), and competitive shooters break under it (movement speed structurally unbalanced)—teleport as a locomotion option mainly serves non-competitive single-player and co-op. Within the highly sensitive population there are intermediate needs: between full teleport and full smooth movement sit gradual-acceleration movement (slow ramp-up to target speed) and view-locked movement (viewpoint locked forward while moving), and a multi-tier locomotion menu lets each sensitivity level find its fit. Teleport's rhythm cost (the interaction burden of repeatedly choosing destinations) grows over long distances; hybrid schemes (teleport primary plus smooth movement on key segments) or distance-graded teleport (short hops smooth, long jumps teleported) soften it. Teleport also needs full gameplay integration: if enemy AI assumes continuous player movement (unable to respond to teleport dodges), teleport breaks combat design—it must be a fully supported locomotion mode (combat, puzzles, exploration all adapted), not a patch taped onto the main experience.
Applying it
- Provide a complete locomotion menu: smooth movement (adjustable speed), gradual movement (acceleration buffering), teleport (adjustable arc display and landing confirmation), each adapted across the full gameplay flow.
- Design the teleport targeting system completely: range limits, valid-landing rules, arrival transition effects, and test teleport's balance in combat scenes.
- Verification: have highly sensitive testers complete the same exploration segment using smooth, gradual, and teleport locomotion, comparing playable duration (time before symptoms) and task completion. The teleport group playing through while the smooth group quits mid-way proves the teleport tier's necessity.
