Pure numerical growth loses meaning
Aliases: stat inflation · empty progression · power creep · meaningless numbers
What it is
Empty numerical progression occurs when attack, defence, rating, or resources keep increasing without changing viable strategies, perceptible outcomes, challenge relations, or social meaning. The number changes, but it is only a larger ruler; when enemies and gates inflate in parallel, the player’s relative situation may remain identical.
Why it happens
Numbers compress complex state and are easily treated as evidence of progress. Their meaning, however, comes from comparative consequence: whether a higher value makes a formerly impossible action viable, creates a new trade-off, or changes how others and the system respond. When environmental parameters rise at the same rate, or increments are too small to perceive in action, the reinforcement loop retains measurement without new mastery, surprise, or choice.
Where it stops holding
Numerical growth is not inherently empty. Fine-grained probabilities, thresholds, and damage calculations can support deep builds, and some players enjoy optimization and record keeping. The issue is not many numbers but concealed consequences, incomparable values, or growth serving only forced extension. Removing numbers does not help if replacement icons and ranks likewise leave experience unchanged.
Applying it
- Map value changes to perceptible thresholds, abilities, enemy interactions, or strategic trade-offs, explaining what improvement enables rather than only showing a delta.
- Limit parallel inflation of levels, enemies, and resources; supplement vertical growth with lateral choices, combinations, and new task contexts.
- Verification: sample adjacent growth nodes and compare available strategies, completion methods, and experienced difference. If only the number changes, merge, redesign, or remove that layer.
