Narrow windows make combos viable only for high reaction speed
Aliases: reaction time · timing demand · accessible timing · input window
What it is
Timing accessibility asks whether an input window restricts a strategy, combination, or content to the few players advantaged in reaction speed and device conditions. An overly narrow combo window lets players know sequence and tactics yet fail through ordinary perceptual and motor variation; the barrier is no longer the combo decision.
Why it happens
Human reaction, motor execution, input hardware, and display all carry timing error. When a window is smaller than their combined error, success depends chiefly on physiology, latency, and chance rather than observation, planning, or practice. Players conclude "my hands are too slow" and abandon an advanced system, while the game loses chances to teach rhythm and combination.
Where it stops holding
Precision modes, speedrunning, and rhythm play can use narrow windows when that is explicit, voluntary, calibrated, trainable, and comparable. Mainline actions, access settings, and unstable-network experiences need a wider alternative path. Averages alone are inadequate; device and state differences belong in the budget.
Applying it
- Set windows from target ability rather than one ideal player's fastest response, testing devices, ages, and input conditions.
- Preserve strategy through buffering, segmentation, cues, optional assistance, or alternate action rather than one speed gate.
- Verification: measure success across window widths among players who understand the sequence. Stable understanding with sharply reduced success means the window tests reaction, not combo skill.
