Teaching and free-play stages make growth feel different

Aliases: onboarding · free play · scaffolding · skill perception

What it is

Learning-phase difference is the different felt rate of growth in teaching and free play. Teaching uses decomposed tasks and immediate prompts, so progress appears rapid. Free play asks players to choose goals, combine abilities, and handle uncertainty; progress feels slower but is more transferable. Later growth should not be judged by the continuous-reward scale of onboarding.

Why it happens

Teaching reduces variables and failure cost, making causal relations clear. Free play restores complexity, so ability requires integration and transfer. Removing all scaffolds abruptly makes players think growth stopped; continuing to decompose every step prevents autonomous competence. Transition should let players see that an action once guided can now serve several self-chosen goals.

Where it stops holding

Players leave teaching at different rates; return, new systems, or changed cooperative roles may need local scaffolds again. Free play does not mean no hints, only that hints do not choose goals or strategies. "Free" can mean exploration, building, or expression rather than combat.

Applying it

  • After teaching, give a short task with player-chosen goals that reuses the new ability without one route.
  • Fade prompts in layers while retaining on-demand practice and explanation.
  • Verification: compare whether players can explain why they acted before and after transition. Waiting for instruction means free play arrived too early.
