Failure must be attributable to a specific action
Aliases: diagnostic feedback · causal clarity · actionable feedback · error attribution
What it is
Failure attribution lets players connect a failure to a specific input, judgement, preparation, or observable condition and propose a next change. It is neither exposing every internal value nor a generic "you failed" message. The result needs a causal chain clear enough for a player's mental model. Only attributable failure turns into practice.
Why it happens
Without a reason, retry repeats the same behavior or switches strategies randomly. Legible timing, state, damage source, resource change, and opponent reaction let players isolate variables and form a hypothesis: evade earlier, hold resources, take another route. Attribution also sustains fairness: even severe failure is more acceptable when its cause is visible and rules stable. Feedback that points to an unchangeable general trait cannot support improvement.
Where it stops holding
Mystery, horror, and hidden-information games may leave causes temporarily incomplete, but must leave a clue for the next test. Multiplayer failures often have several causes and should not crudely blame one player; show a shared timeline and actionable team information. Excess statistics can overwhelm a just-failed player, so prioritize the nearest, most changeable, goal-relevant cause.
Applying it
- Record and visualize consequential events, state, and input before failure, prioritizing one changeable proximate cause.
- Connect feedback to next action: show a safe window, available counter, or missing resource, not only total damage.
- Let replay, practice, or cheap retry immediately test a player's hypothesis.
- Verification: after failure, ask testers to predict what changing one behavior would do. No specific prediction means feedback did not establish attribution.
