Resolution and zoom differences make shared text unreadable

What it is

Display scaling mismatch occurs when a presenter’s high-resolution desktop, display scale, or small font is compressed onto a viewer’s smaller screen, different zoom, or low-bandwidth stream. Text and detail that are clear locally become unreadable remotely. A successful stream is not usable content.

Why it happens

Video systems scale whole frames for bandwidth and window size; small desktop text, fine lines, and chart labels shrink and compression damages detail. Presenters judge readability on a large local screen and cannot see the viewer’s rendering. Viewers may avoid repeated interruption and carry guesses into work.

Studying it

• Paradigms: test reading and locating under different screen sizes, resolutions, bandwidth, and application scaling.
• Variables: text size, share resolution, stream quality, viewer device, reading error, zoom request, and understanding.
• Methodological caution: average devices omit edge conditions; include mobile, low-vision zoom, and weak connections.

Where it stops holding

Large imagery or oral overview is less affected, but precise values, code, tables, and interface detail cannot rely on a desktop video. Asking viewers to zoom cannot restore detail already lost in the stream.

Applying it

• Share a window and enlarge important content before presenting.
• Provide accessible source links, text excerpts, or high-resolution captures.
• Confirm readability and allow anonymous requests to enlarge.
• Verification: rehearse on the smallest target device and constrained network; ask viewers to read critical text and locate controls.
