Many simultaneous cursors obscure content and disrupt reading

Aliases: telepointer clutter · cursor occlusion · awareness overload

What it is

Collaborative cursor clutter occurs when telepointers, identity labels, and selections cover primary content or disrupt reading. It includes physical occlusion and attentional capture: moving high-contrast marks compete for vision even without covering text. Exposing more collaborators is not equivalent to providing more useful awareness.

Why it happens

Each cursor is small in isolation, but labels, selections, and trails overlap; dense text and small screens lose usable area quickly. Onsets and motion attract attention, so task-irrelevant activity repeatedly interrupts reading. Lower opacity reduces occlusion but can hide a relevant indication. Presentation therefore needs selection by relationship and activity rather than uniform visibility.

Studying it

Manipulate visible cursor count, active proportion, opacity, and aggregation in shared-editing tasks. Measure reading speed, comprehension, misclicks, detection of a relevant pointer, and distraction. Eye tracking can locate shifts but is optional; screen and task events often suffice. Static cursor arrays do not reproduce the attention cost of real motion.

Where it stops holding

In demonstrations, games, or collective art, group motion may itself be content. Large canvases tolerate more pointers than phones. Hiding everyone removes conflict prevention and social presence, so relevance management—not zero visibility—is the goal.

Applying it

  • Emphasize collaborators in the same viewport, object, or recent interaction and fade idle or distant pointers.
  • Expand labels on dwelling, speaking, or pointing; collapse them otherwise and aggregate overlapping selections.
  • Offer a related-collaborators filter and temporary focus mode.
  • Test comprehension, misclicks, and missed critical pointers on small screens with moving cursors.
