Change summaries are better than item-by-item logs

What it is

Change summarization compresses modifications over time by object, intent, or relevance, so people first learn what merits attention, who changed it and why, and what resulted rather than reading raw operations one by one. It does not replace traceable history; it is an entry point into history when attention is limited.

Why it happens

Item logs faithfully preserve operations but fragment meaning across typing, moves, undo, and formatting. A returning person must reconstruct boundaries, authorship, and outcome, at a cost that grows with absence. Summaries regroup events into work units through hierarchy, time aggregation, and semantic difference. Excessive compression, however, can hide anomalies and minority contributions.

Studying it

• Paradigms: compare raw logs, automatic summaries, and human summaries on return-to-work comprehension, review, or conflict diagnosis.
• Variables: event volume, aggregation window, object versus author grouping, comprehension, time to locate, omissions, and workload.
• Methodological caution: click counts favour short summaries; test whether users can find significant detail folded away.

Where it stops holding

Audit, compliance, and consequential work require complete records. Summaries must not bury irreversible deletion, permission changes, or anomalous action, and roles need different granularities.

Applying it

• Group changes by work object and purpose by default, with a clear route to raw history.
• Highlight changes affecting dependencies, decisions, permissions, or others’ content instead of foregrounding formatting noise.
• Let recipients filter by object, author, and absence period.
• Verification: ask returning members to find recent consequential changes using the summary, then check omissions and misreadings against full history.
