U6.11.3The exploration path itself is an analytical productdesign

Which hypotheses got tried and ruled out along the way carries information the final chart doesn't

Aliases: exploration path · process as product

What it is

Analysis's output is not only the final conclusion chart but also the path that reached it: which hypotheses were tried, which cuts were ruled out, at which step the turning point appeared. The path carries information the conclusion cannot — the sources of confidence ("I compared three scopes"), the boundary of blind spots ("we never looked at lower-tier markets"), the value of reuse ("next time start from step three"). Treating the path as a product is the first formal act of preserving procedural knowledge.

Why it happens

The path's product value has three sources: confidence assessment — a conclusion's trustworthiness depends on the process that produced it (samples, scopes, number of comparisons), and the path is the only record of that; knowledge transfer — what novices need is not conclusion templates but a demonstration of "how an experienced person cuts the data," and path replay is the most direct carrier of that tacit knowledge; and meta-analysis raw material — reviewing afterwards "why didn't we think of that cut then" requires the exploration order as evidence. All of this demands the path be persisted as a readable object: an annotated operation timeline, not fragments scattered across chats and memory.

Where it stops holding

The path product's edges lie in recording density and privacy: fully automatic logging of every step is the baseline, but path readability still needs user annotations ("found the anomaly here") — a raw operation log replays poorly. Paths may expose sensitive strategy information (investigation logic, data blind spots), and their visibility should be governed alongside the conclusion's visibility. One more boundary: a path is not proof — it raises transparency but does not replace statistical rigour; citations should still present the data and scopes, with the path as supporting evidence.

Applying it

  • Let session history export as an annotated path document (timeline plus per-step state summary plus user notes).
  • Attach the exploration path link to the conclusion documents of important analyses.
  • Verification: have an analyst who was not involved retell from the path document alone "how this conclusion was reached and what was ruled out along the way"; a complete retelling means the path-as-product mechanism works.
