A map that borrows an outline just to signal place-relatedness isn't actually doing analytical work

What it is

A decorative map borrows an outline, basemap texture, or location pins to signal that a subject is place-related, without letting position, adjacency, or extent answer an analytical question. It can set context, but it is not an analytical encoding. If removing the map leaves every task answer unchanged, the map is probably not doing data work.

Why it happens

Maps convey authority and setting, so geographic backdrop is easily mistaken for a geographic variable. Roads, boundaries, and place labels compete with numeric marks and add loading, zoom, and accessibility costs. Readers may also search the arrangement for spatial patterns that the display cannot support.

Where it stops holding

A subdued locator map has a valid role in narrative framing, place selection, or establishing coverage, provided it is clearly not a comparison device. The removal test does not invalidate all background: coastlines, boundaries, and landmarks matter when they explain a spatial result.

Applying it

• Name an observable task verb for the map—locate, compare adjacency, or identify a hotspot. If none fits, remove it or use a more direct form.
• Put locator basemaps at low contrast so they do not compete with data colors and labels.
• Verify by masking the basemap while retaining data marks. If answers do not change, reduce it to a locator thumbnail or remove it.
