What it is
Researcher positionality describes how organizational affiliation, expertise, language, gender, class, and perceived allegiance shape access, disclosure, and interpretation. What becomes visible changes through participant reactivity, gatekeeping, and the observer's own attentional frame.
Why it happens
A researcher introduced by management may see compliance performances; a frontline peer may reach informal practice yet struggle to question power. Insiders understand jargon but naturalize routines, while outsiders notice anomalies and risk misreading them. Trust evolves, so positionality is not a static demographic checklist.
Studying it
Document entry routes, denied spaces, roles present, relationship changes, and researcher reactions in reflexive memos. Compare researchers, access routes, and evidence sources and treat differences as evidence about access structure. Report who was absent or unable to speak.
Where it stops holding
Disclosure does not remove bias, and multiple researchers can share one institutional standpoint. Covert observation raises serious ethics concerns and is not a default solution to reactivity. Familiarity may support candor while increasing evaluation and confidentiality risks.
Applying it
- State how identity, entry, and power may open or close evidence.
- Diversify roles and times of access without claiming neutrality.
- Separate observation, participant explanation, and researcher inference in notes.
- Check whether solutions address only the workflow easiest for observers to see.
